About the event

Literati Arts presents: Black Care '23

Black Care 23: 'The Proverbial Wisdom of Fostering Culture: The Holistic Nurturing of African and Caribbean Children ' with Dr Arlene Weekes

Dr Weekes will deliver what promises to be a keynote address with a difference.

The usual discussions about the care of African and Caribbean children in public care focus on love being enough. However, this historical and continued discourse fails to recognise the inherent lack of understanding of the perils of this notion on the long term wellbeing of the child and the adult they become.

This keynote aims to provide an opportunity for all those involved in finding homes for, who foster or have an interest in caring for children who are or are descendants of Africa and the Caribbean – offering an alternative perspective to the problem, and to share ideas for how to holistically nurture the African and Caribbean child.

This event will take place at De Montfort University as a part of their Black History Month programme and with support from the Stephen Lawrence Research Centre.

Venue: De Montfort University, Hugh Aston Building Room Number 0.08
